Blue Sunday
By: Penny | May 25th, 2008It’s not a good idea to read the gazzetta one day in arrears. I am not in the habit of attempting to read footballer’s minds but I’m guessing that today, when the Azzurri squad gathers is going to be a difficult day for Inzaghi. He was not impressed with being left out, not impressed at all.
He must have had some idea that he wasn’t going. Donadoni hadn’t called him up since his less than sparkling display against France, and hadn’t rung him when he was injured. Inzaghi appears to have spent his recuperation on the settee watching the boxed set of Sex and the City since he took the greatest exception to this. “Not even a telephone call to mark the end of a mature and adult relationship,” he said.
Donadoni was keen to point out, it was nothing to do with Inzaghi’s age, it was for technical and “non-human” reasons, whatever that might mean, and also that he had rung Inzaghi and told him that he wasn’t going. If my less than elementary Italian is right, Inzaghi told one sports programme that Donadoni said that he just wasn’t fit enough, which is a reasonable point, after all it’s been so painful, watching the old man toil up and down the pitch scoring all those goals in the last few games of the season
Either way, I bet that was an interesting conversation. A journalist asked Cannavaro if he had spoken to Inzaghi since the call ups “I haven’t had the courage to call him,” he said “I’ll wait a little while” and he’s not a man to shrink away from a challenge.
It’s a great disappointment for Inzaghi, but for Milan fans maybe it’s good news. He’s not only had injuries this season but health problems as well, and maybe a couple of months getting up to mischief in the Costa Smeralda or wherever would be better for him than sitting on a bench in Austria. This is the downside of his endless enthusiasm to play, but at least it’s appreciated in some quarters “Better this” said one of the Italian officials “than a player who says to the manager “I’m not interested in the national team, thank you.””

Ahh yes! a blog for Pippo Mio!
While it is disappointing that he’s been left out of the Euros, like you said it might be good for him to take a little bit of a break…

We all know he’s a nutter, but I’m rooting for Cassano. He grew up poor in a Bari ghetto without a father. He comes from nothing, but his reedonculous skills have put him in headlines across the world. I think his maturity problems come from his tough background. But maybe, finally, he has learned his lesson and grown up. He was Italy’s best player in the disatrous Euro ‘04 campaign and he has potential to shine again. The way he played at Samp this year — sheeit, he beat whole teams by himself at times. I hope — and want to believe — that he is so eager to prove he’s grown up, so eager to make proud Walter Mazzari who has become a father figure to him, so eager to prove himself to all of Italy and Azzurri faithful the world over, that he might just be the tornado that swirls the World Champions through the group of death. Or maybe he won’t even get on the field ha-ha…but either way his ability and performance has earned him a right on Donadoni’s roster.

Poor Pippo. It’s really a terrible shame for him as he’s a historically great striker. I hope some of his world champion cohorts get the coglioni to give him a call and cheer him up…

I think he did enough to deserve to go, but hopefully he can at least have a good rest for next season. As for Cassano, he reminds me a bit of Paul Gascoigne, which is worrying, I guess this is the ultimate test for him, we’ll have to see how he copes.

It breaks my heart that Pippo didn’t make the squad. I thought his run of form over the last few weeks for Milan would have earned him a spot. However, looking at the roster, I don’t know who I would drop to make room for him. I am putting my faith into Cassano because I want that fairy tale story to come true. Could this mean Inzaghi will join the Olympic team?

Donadoni must have his reasons for leaving Inzaghi out, although they aren’t very obvious to me, I suppose it’s something to be a serious contender for the azzurri at his age.
I’d like to see him at the Olympics, although Milan say they have a policy of not releasing over age players. They won’t allow Kaka to go, but I think that they might let Inzaghi, always supposing that Casiraghi picks him.

Inzaghi should go over Borriello. No Uefa experience, no international experience against one of the most veteran players who clearly has it still in him? Stupid decision. When it comes to crunch time, who’d you expect to pull a goal?

I wonder if Borriello is going to be the player left behind at the end of the week, he hasn’t been too good over the last few months.
