Glum
By: Penny | September 14th, 2008This is painful so we’ll keep it short, (spoilers underneath)
Milan have lost their second game of the season to Genoa, Ancelotti’s position is looking increasingly uncomfortable and Inzaghi is out for about a month with a ‘first grade’ muscle tear. What this means I’m not sure.
It maybe a particularly serious tear or a really top class, clinically interesting tear that specialists will want to examine closely, either way it’s a tear in his left thigh muscle, he’s out, and you wonder what will happen at Milan by the time he returns.
There’s no doubt that since his arrival in 2001 Ancelotti has managed one of the all time great Milan teams. He arrived at the same time as Inzaghi, Nesta and Pirlo, and when Maldini and Schevchenko were at their absolute best. Milan treat their players incredibly well, loving them and looking after them during their playing careers and afterwards. All right, they own them body and soul, but maybe it’s a worthwhile bargain, because there are few other teams which have so many footballers playing on into their late thirties.
Unfortunately, it means when things go wrong, which they have this year, there is a ready made explanation. The consensus in Italy, apparently, is that the team, including Ancelotti, have just been together too long, and maybe the time has come for a new manager. I expect the speculation will start this week, one look at Galliani’s expression indicates that something better happen, and soon.
