He should have taken Pippo
By: Penny | June 23rd, 2008Well, this is an Inzaghi blog, what did you expect me to say? That aside there was a definite lack of goals in this Euro campaign, as Italy exited left without one forward scoring a goal, unless you choose to include Thierry Henry’s effort.
It seems extraordinary that Toni, Cassano and Del Piero couldn’t muster one goal between them, and it’s not clear why. All three have been banging them in on a regular basis, to the extent that Donadoni thought that Inzaghi, with his ten goals in the seven last games of the season, not to mention those in the SuperCoppa and Club World Cup Final, could be safely left at home. Obviously I don’t know if Inzaghi would have made any difference, but I get the feeling it would have been worth a try.
Maybe it was the absence of Totti, maybe chronic exhaustion has finally kicked in with Pirlo, but it’s an unenviable record for this Azzurri team to take home, the first tournament ever where none of the frontline have scored. Italy got as far as they did because they have a truly great goalkeeper in Buffon and because Roumania decided not to turn up against Holland. I don’t know if the quarter final place is going to be enough to save Donadoni’s job, probably not if the Italian FA look at the path Italy took to get there. Donadoni should have taken Pippo, but at the moment I’m rather glad he didn’t.

I wonder if he thinks that as well now, or at least given Borriello a chance.
