The end of the affair
By: Penny | September 4th, 2008So, it seems pretty likely that we have seen the last of Inzaghi’s international appearances. He never seems to have been a particular favourite of Lippi’s, who only selected him for the World Cup in 2006 because the Brazilian manager embarrassed him into it. But even if he were, any forward looking manager would have to think twice before picking a player who will be 37 by the time South Africa comes around.
Although Inzaghi’s been trotting out in the Savoy blue for fourteen years, it’s been a bit hit and miss at times. Although he was at the 1998 and 2002 tournaments, he has one solitary World Cup goal to his name. It was a good one though, against Peter Cech, complete with a despairing dive by the keeper, although Inzaghi’s finest hour might well be the twelve minute hat trick against Wales in 2003. This was particularly praiseworthy since along with the rest of the Italy team he was wearing a strip of particular hideousness, even worse than the present one.
It would take something phenomenal for Inzaghi to force his way back into the national side, but he has said that he’ll never declare himself unavailable, so who knows, I wouldn’t put a triumphant return, or anything else, past him.

Really, if Pippo could get on form I think he’d be a better choice than Gila, for now at least. By the time WC2010 rolls around I wouldn’t want him in the squad (despite my unending love for this man, it’s just not a good idea…)

Sadly his age is starting to matter, I’m sure that he would have gone to the Euros if he wasn’t looking at beginning his midlife crisis anytime soon. All good things come to an end, and even Inzaghi is going to retire at some point.
No, Julian, I think it’s horrible
